What is a LibGuide?

You're looking at one!  A LibGuide is a nifty website system created by a librarian for a specific purpose.  A guide can be created for a course, a subject area, or for a general point of interest.  We're just getting started with guides so be aware that this area is under construction and is subject to change. We're happy to hear any feedback you may have to offer about this new tool, or any other library service for that matter.  Just get in touch with us

How do I use a LibGuide?

It's simple!  Browse or use the search box at the top of the page to locate a LibGuide of interest to you.  Click on a LibGuides page. From there, be sure to check out the bright yellow tabs across the top of the page.  Clicking on a tab brings you to a new web page. Think of a guide as a filing cabinet: there are lots of tabbed folders inside, each with valuable information that somehow deals with the same subject.

Why should I have a LibGuide created for my class?

Help your students!

  • Navigate the information web and easily locate the most appropriate resources for your class
  • Learn the research and evaluative skills that are necessary to succeed
  • Make sense of common points of confusion, such as citation formatting
  • Gain valuable information literacy skills required for life-long learning
  • Have easy access to superior resources = better references and (one would assume) higher quality student work

Help yourself!

  • Build a support system with librarians to work towards student learning and success
  • Tailor the guide to help students understand assignment expectations
  • Tailor the guide so it is the ultimate starting place for research in your subject area
  • Reinforce crucial research concepts
  • Have a great, accessible place to recommend students to outside of office hours

What can a LibGuide Do?

We think the better question is What can't a LibGuide do?

LibGuides connect library services with information resources and course content. As an online resource, it can host or link to just about anything and it's easy to tailor to specific needs.  These are just a few of the features which helps make them relevant and useful to all types of learners. This kind of integration creates amazing opportunities for collaboration and enhanced learning.  Is it any wonder that we're excited to get things started!
